During a storm-bound hunting weekend at an isolated castle, the uninvited Count Oetsch arrives. Rumors accuse him of murdering his brother, whose widow is now married to the castle’s host. As suspicion grows among the guests, secrets and conflicting accounts of the past turn the gathering into a tense murder mystery.
Directed by F.W. Murnau and written by Carl Mayer, the film features Arnold Korff, Lothar Mehnert, Paul Hartmann, and Olga Tschechowa. Though sometimes described as a haunted-house or horror film, it is primarily a suspenseful drawing-room mystery set within a brooding castle atmosphere.
A distinctive addition to a collection of silent cinema, German film, or Murnau’s early work.
