Film Leader 16mm

Film Leader 16mm

A 16mm film leader is a length of sturdy, expendable film attached to the head and tail of a reel to protect the actual picture during handling and projection. Because 16mm projectors require several feet of film to thread through their rollers and reach proper running speed, the leader provides that buffer so the operator never has to touch or risk scratching the first frames of the movie. The leader can be printed with information or left completely blank, but its main purpose is simply to absorb wear, provide safe threading distance, and give enough runout at the end of the reel for a clean shutdown without stressing the final frames. In essence, it’s a sacrificial strip that preserves the integrity of the 16mm film itself.
